Was fragt man Salman Rushdie

What do you ask Salman Rushdie? Now not as a literary journalist, but as a political commentator. Will there be a conflagration in the Middle East? More violence on the streets? What will become of the Palestinians’ right to self-determination and Israel’s right to exist? Is the world out of control? Or more personally: Why aren’t the security precautions so strict here? Does he expect further attacks on his life?

Nothing particularly original. But there was the scene in the more than 20-year-old film “Bridget Jones’s Diary” in which Rushdie plays himself and makes what appears to be sophisticated, funny small talk with bystanders at a reception (very similar to the one on Thursday evening in Frankfurt), and Then Bridget Jones, played by Renée Zellweger, comes in and is suddenly asked by Rushdie for her opinion and says: “Do you know. . .” – everyone stares intently – “. . . “Where are the toilets?”

That’s it, the question of all questions. A nice colleague who has read all of Rushdie’s books (others present: none at all) and also knows the film says that this scene doesn’t even exist. Yes, yes, so off to the Peace Prize winner and freshly asked, with a little reference to the film. He laughs and replies that he is often asked that at parties – so it’s a running gag, so to speak. So the next question is about the wildfire.
