Writing testimonies from the deprivation of liberty involves opening your heart to transmit a little of that experience to other people who do not know their reality. The women identified with the pseudonyms invite us to get involved with this feeling: ALC95, Ave Fénix, Another bold note, Andy, Vale, Shorty, Varón, La voz de la calle and La historia de la Pitu.

Within the framework of World Mental Health Day, this Tuesday, October 10, they presented the book “There is a lot of confinement here”, which brings together writings from women deprived of liberty from the Jauja Penitentiary Establishment, Peru, a maximum security prison (Closed Regime Special, in local terminology) where there is greater emphasis on security and discipline in their lifestyle.

“My worst day in prison was when I stepped into the prison for the first time, and I saw everything in black and white, as if I had no life…”

-Shorty (pseudonym)

Facilitated by Machucabotones, a Peruvian writing organization, and with the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), this work was carried out with the aim of helping them get out of their routine and tell their stories to provide them with tools that would help them express themselves, and thus maintain and improve their health and intellectual and social functioning.
