VAT was reduced from 19 to 7 percent during the corona pandemic. However, this regulation expires at the end of the year. Restaurateurs, associations and companies – including Metro – have been calling for the reduced tax rate to be retained for months.

In Greubel’s original comment, he described the study as a “pseudo report by soulless so-called scientists.” He wouldn’t be surprised if Heinemann and “his accomplices” were banned. He later revised the post. However, he continues to call for a restaurant ban for ZEW economists. Heinemann told the FAS that he was used to offensive statements, but not from a public figure. Restaurateurs also criticized him, but at least in a “proper manner”.

A Metro spokesman, however, said that the debate about VAT was an “emotional issue” for the industry. Steffen Greubel’s clear reaction can be attributed to this fact, as he has “been strongly committed to the cause for many weeks.” According to Heinemann, there has not yet been an apology.
