1805 — the British fleet under the command of a vice admiral Horatio Nelson won a victory over the combined fleets of France and Spain at the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson himself died in the battle, but the victory gave the British absolute domination of the sea for the next 100 years.

1878Vladimir Pichetta, Belarusian historian, first rector of BSU. He studied the history of the Great Patriotic War, Poland, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Russia of the 16th–20th centuries. He published about 150 works on history, historiography, archeology, archival studies, regional studies, and the history of Belarusian law.
