Oregon Rock Climber Charged Over Mass Killing Plot at Smith Rock Mountaineering Event

A 39-year-old rock climber from Portland has been arrested and charged with attempted murder in an alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting at a climbing event in Smith Rock, Central Oregon. The suspect, Samson Zebturiah Garner, was apprehended by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday and is facing multiple charges including attempted murder, assault, and unlawful use of a weapon.

Law enforcement recovered three firearms, including a Beretta 9mm handgun, a Sig Sauer 9mm handgun, and an AR-15, from Garner during his arrest. These weapons have since been seized under an extreme risk protection order, which means they will be taken away for at least a year.

Authorities discovered journal entries among Garner’s belongings that revealed a generalized anger without any specific targets. The potential victims listed in court documents were described as “spectator” and “belayer.” The motive behind the alleged plot remains unclear at this time.

Garner, a resident of Portland, was an active member of the Mazamas, a mountaineering education nonprofit, although his involvement with the group had been limited since 2018. The organization expressed their shock and devastation at the situation, emphasizing that the safety of their members is their top priority.

The target of the planned attack was identified as the Smith Rock Craggin Classic, a three-day climbing festival organized by the American Alpine Club. The club acknowledged the threat and thanked law enforcement for their swift response. They also assured the public that they are cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

The Deschutes County prosecutor, Steve Gunnels, commended the Portland Police Bureau for their quick action in alerting law enforcement about the potential shooting. He stated that Garner appeared to be fully prepared and armed for the attack, driving for several hours to Central Oregon.

Both law enforcement and the Deschutes County Attorney’s Office believe that Garner acted alone and that there are no additional threats to the community. However, the investigation into the plot is still ongoing.

The incident highlights the importance of vigilant reporting and collaboration between law enforcement agencies in preventing potential mass shootings. Authorities commend the timely intervention that prevented a potentially tragic event from occurring.
