Mudslide Disrupts Metro-North and Amtrak Service in Westchester County

TARRYTOWN— A mudslide caused by severe weather conditions in Westchester County has resulted in the disruption of service on Metro-North’s Hudson Line and Amtrak, according to railway agencies. The mudslide occurred on Saturday, October 21, causing significant damage to the tracks between Croton-Harmon and Tarrytown. As a result, Metro-North announced the suspension of service in this area, and the estimated time for normal service to resume remains uncertain.

Metro-North has advised passengers to utilize the Harlem Line, which is running its regular schedule. However, on the Hudson Line, service has been reduced to hourly trains in both directions between Grand Central Terminal and Tarrytown, as well as between Croton-Harmon and Poughkeepsie. Limited bus service is being provided between Tarrytown and Croton-Harmon. Notably, there is currently no service available at Philipse Manor, Scarborough, and Ossining stations.

Amtrak has also been affected by the mudslide, with several lines between Albany and New York City experiencing disruptions. According to an Amtrak advisory, excessive debris has blocked the tracks due to severe weather conditions along the route. Train 280 was terminated in Albany-Rensselaer, and Train 238 was canceled. Other trains have also faced service interruptions throughout the afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service predicts that rain is likely to continue in the Tarrytown area until at least 2 p.m., with a 60 percent chance of precipitation. Saturday night’s forecast indicates a 30 percent chance of rain before 7 p.m., accompanied by gusty winds.

In response to the incident, Governor Kathy Hochul’s office released a statement emphasizing that no injuries have been reported, and no individuals are stranded in the affected areas. The primary focus is now on restoring service as quickly as possible. The governor’s office expressed gratitude for the efforts of MTA personnel and emergency responders in ensuring the safety of commuters, motorists, and all New Yorkers.

In addition to the transportation disruptions caused by the mudslide, the Lark Street Business Improvement District in Albany announced the postponement of the Art on Lark event, originally scheduled for this weekend. The decision was made due to the anticipated heavy rainfall. The organization plans to reschedule the event for June 2024, after the completion of the Lark Street neighborhood’s renovation.

As recovery efforts continue, commuters and residents are urged to stay updated on the status of train services and road conditions in the affected areas.
