Hyderabad: The issue of stipend for junior doctors has become a matter of significant concern in the state, as neither government nor private colleges are providing any financial assistance.
On the one hand, the Telangana Junior Doctors Association (TJDA) has issued a warning to boycott its duties if the delayed stipend and dues are not paid by the end of this month. On the contrary, a recent survey conducted by the National Medical Council revealed that almost 70% of medical colleges have failed to provide mandatory stipend to MBBS interns and PG students.
Junior doctors working in government hospitals have not received their stipend for August and September. Many of these junior doctors are the main breadwinners for their families and a large number of them are facing financial pressure. They are eagerly waiting for the release of their pending stipend, especially during this festive season.
In a representation, TJUDA said, “If we do not get our stipend immediately, we may be forced to launch a strike starting from October 30 as this appears to be the only viable option at this point.” Junior doctors in government hospitals have often faced problems with delays in stipends in the past. In some cases, these issues have only been resolved after resorting to strikes and drawing attention to their concerns.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India on October 17 strongly criticized the National Medical Commission (NMC) in response to the revelation that nearly 70% of medical colleges in the country were not following the requirement of providing stipend to MBBS interns and PG students. Dr. TJUDA advisor M Rajiv Naik said that in Telangana, not a single private college is providing stipend to interns and PGs. In cases where some colleges provide stipend, the payment is either withdrawn by the management through check or is less than the stipend rates in government medical colleges in the state.
Expressing concern, Dr Naik stressed that when colleges fail to pay stipend to students, it amounts to bonded labour, with doctors facing many administrative and infrastructure issues despite Continue to work. He urged private medical colleges to follow NMC rules and pay stipend to interns and PGs at par with the rates provided by government colleges. If not complied with, TJUDA is ready to represent the issue to NMC as per instructions and NMC has warned all private medical colleges on delay in stipend.
