Sergio Staino died today and “I feel pain, authentic pain for the passing of a person with whom we have ‘scared’ hundreds of times, as befits two Tuscans and two men of the left like the two of us…”. It is the first image given by Vauro Senesi, satirical designer of ‘Fatto Quotidiano’, interviewed by time.news on the day Staino, the creator of Bobo, a symbolic character of the cultural world of communist tradition, passed away.

“We even had furious arguments because in reality we shared a passion for politics, for satire, for drawing, for storytelling. And when you share passions, you become passionate to the point of ‘getting mad’. I want to say it – explains Vauro – given that generally in Italy when a person dies they immediately become a saint and recently we have had several of these examples…”. Precisely in this regard, Vauro underlines: “Ours were honest ‘scazzi’, the result not of interests but of common passions, of a common political area, of common Tuscan origin: with enormous differences, but in any case united”.

As a designer, he admits, “when the character of Bobo was born I didn’t like it, to the point that our arguments started right there, from the ‘cradle’ you could say”. Why? “Generally, in satire I don’t like the character. But we must always remember that satire is a game, a game that is never violent but always serious, as children play seriously. It has a playful dimension, despite being harsh and also biting. After that – admits Vauro – I will miss Sergio very much and I will miss his Bobo and our arguments, I don’t know in what order…”.
