Baleària is the first Spanish shipping company to receive the label Green Marine Europe, an ecological certification that recognizes the commitment of maritime companies to eco-efficiency and care for the planet. Baleària thus reaffirms its leadership in sustainability by joining this voluntary initiative of the maritime industry whose objective is to improve the environmental performance of maritime transport beyond regulatory requirements, as indicated in a statement.
The shipping company has joined this initiative focused on key environmental issues related to air, water and soil quality. This accreditation is a reference tool to facilitate the monitoring and improvement of maritime companies’ commitment to decarbonization.
“Baleària’s participation in the Green Marine Europe certification is a clear sign of the broad European dimension of our program, since it is the first Spanish shipowner to join us. Baleària is an important player in the transport of passengers and goods, and is part of the collective imagination, in Europe and the rest of the world”, Antidia Citores, project director of Green Marine Europe.
To receive the Green Marine Europe label, Baleària has undergone an audit and a self-assessment to certify compliance with a series of scales related to the emission of greenhouse gases, polluting atmospheric emissions, underwater noise, invasive aquatic species , the management of ship recycling.
In this sense, it is worth remembering that Balearia is one of the leading shipping companies in the decarbonization of activity at sea thanks to its pioneering commitment to natural gas, a fuel that it considers transitional as it is the cleanest and most mature that currently exists for maritime transport. The company has invested more than 500 million in recent years to have a new generation fleet of 10 dual-engine boats, a versatile technology that will allow it to stop emitting nearly 80,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere between June 1 and End of the year.
On the other hand, the Green Marine Europe label joins other initiatives and certificates that Baleària has as a shipping company committed to decarbonization and environmental protection. Among them, the participation in the last two editions in the Climate Change Summit (COP), the certification of ISO 14001 (environment), and 50001 (energy efficiency), the Lean & Green Europe certificate, the registration seal of the carbon footprint, compensation and CO2 absorption projects of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, inclusion in the Biodiversity Pact, among others.
