Nintendo Confirms Nintendo Accounts Will Carry Over to Next Generation Hardware

Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has reiterated in an interview with Inverse that Nintendo Accounts will carry over to a new generation of hardware. While he remained tight-lipped about rumors of a “Switch successor,” Bowser did confirm that Nintendo’s goal is to minimize the disruption typically seen during the transition from one console cycle to another.

The formation of the Nintendo Account with the release of the Switch was a strategic move by Nintendo to facilitate communication and ease the transition process for players. In the past, each new device came with a separate account system, causing inconvenience for users. However, with the Nintendo Account, the company can now communicate with players during potential platform transitions.

“Our goal is to minimize the dip you typically see in the last year of one cycle and the beginning of another. I can’t speak to the possible features of a new platform, but the Nintendo Account is a strong basis for having that communication as we make the transition,” said Bowser.

This reiteration from Bowser follows Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa’s statement in June about wanting to smoothly transition customers to the next generation machine through the utilization of the Nintendo Account system.

While there is confirmation that Nintendo Accounts will carry over to the next generation system, it remains unknown whether users’ existing libraries of digital titles will also transfer. Nintendo has yet to make an official statement on this matter.

The news of Nintendo’s commitment to utilizing its existing account system has been met with relief by many fans. It ensures a seamless transition between consoles, providing convenience and peace of mind for Nintendo players.
