THE Gleaner: ESTAMPA AWARDS 2023

The fact that around a third of the galleries participating in ESTAMPA had selected only male artists for this 2023 edition, already foreshadowed what could happen with the 17 awards awarded to artists: only six have gone to female artists, that is , approximately a third, which reproduces the previous screening.

The winners are: Community of Madrid/Estampa award to the artist Mercedes Pimientofrom the Isabel Hurley gallery, for her sculptural work belonging to the series ‘Neutral Surface’, already Irene Infantes, for its textile piece by Alarcón Criado. DiGoodCollection has also awarded the creator María José Gallardo, from La Gran. The Navacerrada Collection has recognized Teresa Moro, from the Siboney gallery. Furthermore, the artist Gema Quiles, from the Herrero de Tejada gallery, has won the Aldebaran Collection Award. Finally, this year, the acquisition of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Madrid has fallen to Elvira Love, from the Moisés Pérez Albéniz -MPA- gallery. To all of them, congratulations!

It has been more than ten years since MAV, after publishing a Report on Awards, denounced that only a third of female artists received awards, while they were only a third (or less) of Fine Arts graduates in recent decades. Since the artists awarded at ESTAMPA belong to those same generations, we note that:

1) this art fair has remained stagnant in time, perpetuating the unfair lack of equity that benefits a third of all artists with triple the opportunities just because they are men.

2) unlike other fairs, neither its management nor its advisory board has done anything to correct the inertia and cooptation that lead to sexist discrimination.

As citizens of this country, we are ashamed that a fair that claims to be popular and with affordable prices is, in reality, a bastion of the most disgusting sexist scourge.
