A new meeting between Cuban and American officials will take place in Havana on November 14, according to the media outlet Martí Noticias.

The objective of the meeting will be to discuss the implementation of the Migration Agreements between the US and Cuba, a series of bilateral agreements that date back to 1984, according to information offered by the State Department.

A spokesperson for that organization told the aforementioned media that “these conversations are consistent with our interest in promoting family reunification and promoting greater respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Cuba.”

Furthermore, the source added that “these bilateral discussions on migration, held every two years, reflect the commitment of both countries to periodically review the implementation of the Agreements and represent a continuation of our long commitment with Cuba on migration.”

According to the spokesperson, it remains a “primary objective” for the US to “ensure safe, orderly, humane and regular migration” between both countries.

The last meeting of this type took place last April in Washington, in which delegations from the two nations participated, led in the case of the United States by the Deputy Undersecretary for the Western Hemisphere of the Department of Homeland Security, David Chloe, and the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, for the island.

U.S. officials at the time highlighted areas of successful cooperation on migration and identified obstacles to meeting the objectives of the Accords.

Martí Noticias remembers the other meeting that took place last November where both countries agreed to resume deportation flights for migrants declared “inadmissible” by the US.

Finally, the increase in Cubans who continue to cross the southern border of the northern nation was mentioned, whose numbers, according to the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP), rose in August to more than 12 thousand Cubans, almost double the those registered in July.

Despite warnings from US authorities that migrants detained while trying to enter their country irregularly will be repatriated and will not be eligible for the humanitarian parole program, the statistics continue to rise.

For example, in the fiscal year ending last September 30, the number of Cubans intercepted at the border rose to 185,000 and in the same period another 7,000 rafters were intercepted by the US Coast Guard.
