The former member of the National Army, Third Corporal Jonathan Díaz Angulo, was sentenced to 11 years in prison after having tortured a high school soldier on several occasions in the facilities of the Tolemaida Military Fort, in Nilo, Cundinamarca.

According to the investigation, Díaz, in his capacity as a military instructor, committed acts of physical and emotional violence in March 2014, after having strong verbal confrontations with a soldier who had been incorporated a year earlier.

The evidence indicated that for reasons of revenge and disobedience, Díaz ordered several uniformed officers to tie the young soldier’s hands and feet and immerse him in a septic tank. He would have applied this procedure on at least four different occasions in order to torture his subordinate.

According to the accusing body, in this way the victim was exposed to and consumed human excrement, mud, garbage and other polluting agents, which put her health and integrity at serious risk.

After the investigation carried out by a prosecutor from the Special Directorate against Human Rights Violations, it was possible to corroborate, through testimonial evidence, medical and psychiatric analyses, that the young soldier suffered serious damage as a result of these abuses, according to the court report.

Likewise, the decision was reached that the accused and now sentenced non-commissioned officer completely abused the dominant position and authority he had by subjecting one of his subordinates to such torture.

The Special Director against Human Rights Violations of the Prosecutor’s Office, Hugo Tovar Pérez, stated that the former member was responsible for the crime of torture.

“Jonathan Díaz Angulo committed acts of physical and emotional violence against a high school student, in that sense a judge declared him guilty of the crime of torture and sentenced him to 11 years in prison,” said director Pérez.

For this reason, Díaz must finish serving this sentence in the High and Medium Security Prison of Popayán, Cauca, where he has already been deprived of liberty since July 2021.
