Jean-Philippe Tanguy has questioned the fact that Qatar owns the Paris Saint-Germain club.

National Rally deputy Jean-Philippe Tanguy said on Sunday he wanted “question the fact that Qatar owns PSG”, seeing “a means of considerable influence» for the Gulf country, which currently acts as a mediator with Hamas.

«We must question the fact that Qatar owns PSG, in any case that it is a majority shareholder and decision-maker, for a simple reason: it is a means of considerable influence», declared Mr. Tanguy on LCI.

«LFootballers have a role of moral prescription»

«It is obvious that for a considerable number of young and old (…), footballers have a very important moral, intellectual and cultural role.», further argued the elected official from the Somme. Paris Saint-Germain has been majority-owned since 2011 by QSI, a Qatari sovereign fund which has injected hundreds of millions of euros into the club, and managed by Qatari Nasser Al-Khelaïfi.

Generally speaking, Mr. Tanguy called for a “examination of conscience of French leaders to restore great prudence in the power that Qatar has», referring in particular to the tax advantages enjoyed by the emirate in France. “The red carpet has been rolling out for years in French political life, but also in the economic life of the country with Qatari investments», echoed on the set of the Grand Rendez-vous (Europe 1/Cnews/Les Echos) the boss of the RN Jordan Bardella, calling for “avoid hypocrisy».

«We also know that Qatar finances terrorist movements like Hamas.“, he continued. But “today, in the current state of things, there is an emergency, it is to free the hostages“, he argued. The rich gas emirate, which houses the political office of Palestinian Hamas in Doha, is working to negotiate the release of hostages captured on October 7 during the attacks in Israel, including French nationals.

«Obviously when there are hostages, you have to use all possible diplomatic channels, that seems logical to me», declared on BFMTV Marion Maréchal, head of the Reconquest list in the European elections. But “perhaps we should also ask ourselves the question of the role of Qatar, which today is both the intermediary (…) and the sponsor of Hamas“, she highlighted, insisting on “the influence it can have in a certain number of our suburbs through socio-economic, cultural and even sometimes religious investments».
