New Far Cry Game Revealed: Project Maverick – An Extraction-Based Multiplayer Shooter

by time news

Ubisoft Montreal is currently working on a second Far Cry game, separate from the upcoming Far Cry 7, according to sources at Insider Gaming. The new game, codenamed Project Maverick, is an extraction-based multiplayer shooter set in a fictional Alaskan setting called Alashnica.

Project Maverick has undergone several scope changes during its development process. Initially conceived as a multiplayer game under the Talisker codename, it has since evolved into a standalone Far Cry project. The game’s lore revolves around players being enticed into Alashnica with the promise of freedom, only to find a chaotic land where trust is scarce.

In typical Far Cry fashion, players will need to scavenge for resources in order to survive. This includes hunting animals for leather, gathering chemicals for gadgets, harvesting plants for medical supplies, and finding weapon parts and ammunition. The game will also feature a Hideout, which serves as the player’s base of operations and a safe place to store acquired weapons and gear.

While Project Maverick can be played solo, it also offers a team-based multiplayer experience, with teammates being able to share the same Hideout and loot. The game loop focuses on gathering gear, leveling up, and purchasing perks. Perks are directly tied to the leveling system and can be acquired by completing in-game contracts.

Project Maverick is described as a high-risk, high-reward game, as permadeath is enabled. If a player dies, they lose everything, including gear, perks, and levels. The only items that are left intact are those stored in the Hideout.

Insider Gaming suggests that Project Maverick is scheduled to be released before Far Cry 7, with a tentative release date set for April 2025. The game is expected to enter the Alpha phase in the first half of 2024. However, due to Ubisoft’s history of internal delays, these dates should be approached with caution.

Fans of the Far Cry series are looking forward to learning more about Project Maverick in the near future. The multiplayer-centric approach to the game has garnered mixed reactions, and players are eager to see how the extraction-based gameplay and Alaskan setting will differentiate it from previous titles in the franchise.
