A long life has come to an end. Bobi, who was officially recognized as the world’s oldest dog in February, died this Saturday at the age of 31 years and 165 days. This Rafeiro from the Alentejo, a breed of dog that is almost only found in Portugal, died near his family in the village of Conqueiros, near Leiria, specifies the Guinness World Records which made the echo of the news.

Bobi’s death was also confirmed by his master, Leonel Costa, to several Portuguese media including SIC News. The thirty-year-old dog had been hospitalized for a few days after internal problems were detected, and unfortunately did not survive.

“One of the pillars” of the family

“We had just started specific treatment. Despite this, he did not resist. It was a hard fight and only a warrior like him could have held out for so long,” Leonel Costa told SIC Notícias.

“All that remains are the best memories of a long life where he was happy and made many people happy, especially his family who today feel that one of his pillars has collapsed,” a- he added.

Born on May 11, 1992, Bobi was registered at birth in the databases of the Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria, Portugal, which allowed Guinness World Records to ensure the veracity of his age . Leonel Costa was only 8 years old when Bobi was born, who knew all generations of the family in which he grew up. Bobi’s longevity ran in the family, as his mother lived to be 18 years old.

A miracle dog

However, Bobi almost never saw the light of day. Indeed, when he was born in 1992, Leonel Costa’s father decided not to keep the puppy and the rest of the litter. But, hiding behind logs, Bobi escaped the cruel fate reserved for his four brothers who were buried alive. “Unfortunately, at that time, it was considered normal by elderly people who could not have more animals at home (…) to bury them in a hole so that they did not survive,” emphasized Leonel Costa with the Guinness World Records.

Then aged 8, Bobi’s future master, accompanied by his brother, discovered the puppy and hid his existence from his parents for a few days, until Bobi opened his eyes. “It was common knowledge that you could not or should not bury a living being if it had opened its eyes,” recalled Leonel Costa.

There followed a memorable argument between parents and children, but the whole family ended up adopting Bobi: “I admit that when they found out, they yelled a lot and punished us, but it was worth it ! »
