“The journalistic profession, intrinsically ethical, is essential to defend the idea of good that José Martí described,” said Ricardo Ronquillo Bello, president of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC) during a conversation, this October 19, with third-year Journalism students from the Faculty of Communication of the University of Havana.

Adrián Fonseca Quesada, representative of the Institute of Information and Social Communication (IICS) and Edilberto Carmona Tamayo, deputy director of Media Development and Support at Ideas Multimedios, assumed, together with Ronquillo, the role of teachers in the meeting that was part of the subject Ethics and Deontology of Journalism.

After resorting to his now almost customary graphic explanation of some of the structural problems of the press model in Cuba and citing Julio García Luis, “among those who best outlined the route of the possible transformation of journalism,” the president of the UPEC He stated that one of the greatest current aspirations lay in “achieving a regulatory system that would grant a superior capacity for self-management to the media system from a legal, political and institutional point of view.”

The press – he added – must be part of the mechanisms of social and popular control and with that purpose in mind, the first Social Communication Law in the history of Cuba has also been projected, approved on May 25 of this year.

In this regard, Adrián Fonseca spoke about some of the particularities of this new legal body and explained the importance of complying with all associated regulations, one of the main functions of the IICS.

“The Law – stated the representative of said Institute – is not directed only at the media sector, but also regulates communication in institutional and community settings” and has people at its center “as an object of law.”

For Fonseca Quesada, IDEAS Multimedios is one of those that has made the most progress in realizing the new press model that the country aspires to.

Hence, he gave the floor to Edilberto Carmona who explained details of the process of both editorial and economic transformation of the media entity that makes up the Round Table, the Fidel Soldado de las Ideas site, the digital portal Cubadebate and the programs Con Filo and Squaring the Box.

As part of this evolution, it has been fundamental -according to the specialist- the creation of different work teams for the management of content on networks, the production of audiovisuals for different platforms, and the study of innovative practices in other media around the world with the purpose to transfer those experiences to the particularities of the Cuban context.

From this perspective, the approval of a strategy for advertising and marketing, as well as other services provided, has allowed IDEAS Multimedio to generate significant profits used in updating the websites, financing technological equipment, arranging the new headquarters and in the salary stimulus for the workers of the media entity.

A student’s concern about the link between the Communication Law and the credibility of the media made Adrián Fonseca highlight article 33 of the law, which clarifies that we will be more credible to the extent that audiences are more represented. .

An idea closely linked to the definition that Ronquillo provides about journalism: “It is the art of asking and wondering.” From such personal interiorities it is possible to establish credibility.
