Five people, including four Bayern Munich fans, were lightly injured on Tuesday in clashes in Istanbul before the Champions League match between Galatasaray and the German team, Turkish media reported. According to videos posted on social networks, a group bringing together several dozen Bayern Munich supporters found themselves at the heart of a brawl on Istiklal Avenue, a huge pedestrian thoroughfare lined with streets teeming with bars, around 03:00 (00:00 GMT).

Several fights broke out with supporters of Galatasaray, whose neighborhood is the stronghold, accompanied by the throwing of chairs and bottles. Munich fans also threw projectiles at the window of the official Galatasaray store, in front of which the Turkish police intervened. Five people, including four Germans aged 24 to 32, suffered minor facial injuries, according to the Turkish news agency IHA. All had left the hospital Tuesday morning, according to the same source.

Contacted by AFP, the German consulate in Istanbul did not immediately respond. Leader of Group A of the Champions League, Bayern Munich will try on Tuesday evening to secure a third consecutive victory in the competition on the ground of Galatasaray, who defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford on the second day.
