The war between Israel and Hamas is also being played out in the field of communication. Interrogations of Hamas members filmed by the Israeli authorities were broadcast on television and on social networks, including the X account (formerly Twitter) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this Tuesday, October 24. Here’s what they say.

The edited sequences are taken from individual interrogations. For Israel, it is a question of knowing more about the attacks on the morning of Saturday October 7 from the mouths of “Hamas terrorists”. A video published on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, twelve minutes long, shows six men who were taken prisoner. They appear with their faces uncovered and their hands handcuffed. One of them has a swollen eye. Another, with a bandage on his arm, grimaces regularly. They answer questions from the police, only their voices are audible.

On the sequences chosen by Israel, the terrorists put up no resistance. Name, town of origin, role in Hamas: everyone explains their identity calmly. What was their mission? “Infiltrating the military bastion of Sufa”, in the south of Israel, say two of them. They all explain that they followed the “orders” dictated by Hamas leaders. “It was necessary to kill young men, regardless of whether they were soldiers or civilians, to capture women, the elderly and children,” specifies the man who presents himself as “section leader” of the terrorist movement.

Kfar Aza, Be’eri… The names of the kibbutz a few kilometers from Gaza, scene of massacres, are cited. According to one of the prisoners, the order to take hostages came later; the priority was first to “clean” the place, to “empty” it of its inhabitants.

The rest of the exchanges make it possible to document the nightmare experienced by the inhabitants of the kibbutz, to which the survivors have already testified. Houses burned, “entire families” shot “by surprise” including “one of four children with her dog”, a man “who was watering his plants” murdered, residents used as “human shields”. Chilling anecdote: terrorists allegedly took “a selfie” with a 15-year-old girl before murdering her. A prisoner with a youthful face claims to have been reproached by a superior for “wasting bullets” on a dying victim.

Since the start of the war, Israel has intended to show the world who is the aggressor and who is the attacked. “The first objective consists of alerting world public opinion to the nature and seriousness of Hamas’s attacks and the other is to oppose Hamas’s victim doctrine by reminding us of the facts: it is the Islamist movement which is at fault. the origin of the conflict”, deciphers David Colon, professor at Sciences-po and author of “Information Warfare: States conquering our minds”.

“An apartment and $10,000 per hostage”

This deadly enterprise would have been motivated by greed. “Those who bring a hostage to Gaza get an apartment and $10,000. This is how it happens in the El Qassam brigades (the armed wing of Hamas),” a terrorist coldly justifies, well aware that this promise was to take “as many hostages as possible.”

The six prisoners are then questioned about their faith: “Do the Koran and Islam say anything about such acts? » “No,” they concede, heads bowed. Half of them are very critical of Hamas, claiming “to have been duped and deceived”. “They are at home, in Qatar and Turkey. (…) They are there while their families are being bombed in Gaza,” criticizes one of the youngest. Ismaïl Haniyeh, Khaled Mechaal… members of the Hamas political bureau are singled out: “The Hamas command has abandoned us. »
