Film Review: “Nyad” Tells the Inspiring Story of Diana Nyad’s Incredible Swim
In the film “Nyad,” Annette Bening delivers a powerhouse performance as Diana Nyad, the determined long-distance swimmer who set out at the age of 60 to swim from Cuba to Florida. While Bening gives it her all, the film falls short in exploring Nyad’s backstory.
The movie focuses on Nyad’s incredible journey, as she faces daunting challenges such as sharks, jellyfish, and the prejudice she encounters as both a woman and an older athlete. Throughout the film, Nyad is constantly surrounded by people, from her best friend Bonnie to the grumpy yet supportive boat captain John. Memories of her inspirational father and abusive coach also fuel her drive.
Diana Nyad’s swim is a solitary endeavor, as she must face the treacherous waters alone. She endures sickness and fatigue, relying on a pole for nourishment and wearing a suffocating anti-jellyfish mask. Any contact with another person would nullify her attempt. Bening portrays Nyad as a tough and borderline-crazy individual, never giving up even in the face of multiple failures. Her intense gaze reflects her determination, reminiscent of Clint Eastwood reading an optician’s chart.
On the other hand, Jodie Foster’s character, Bonnie, Nyad’s coach and friend, lacks depth and fails to truly challenge Foster’s acting abilities. Rhys Ifans shines in his role as the grizzled and experienced boat captain, reminiscent of Robert Shaw in “Jaws,” guiding the team through dangerous waters.
While “Nyad” is a robust and inspiring story, it fails to delve into the painful reality of Nyad’s childhood abuse. The film chooses to focus on Nyad’s triumph over adversity, glossing over her traumatic memories with a quickness and glibness that may leave some viewers unsatisfied.
Directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, the duo behind the acclaimed documentary “Free Solo,” “Nyad” shares similarities with their previous work. However, the Hollywood glamour and theatrics overshadow the authenticity found in “Free Solo.” Nevertheless, the film remains captivating and watchable, leaving audiences inspired by Nyad’s remarkable achievement.
“Nyad” is currently playing in cinemas and will be available on Netflix from November 3rd.
Overall, “Nyad” offers a compelling portrayal of an extraordinary swimmer’s incredible journey. While it may skim over Nyad’s backstory, the film’s earnest performances and inspirational message make it worth watching.
