Lula and Bolsonaro came face to face in the last debate of 2022

A criminal complaint was presented by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) to the Federal Supreme Court against the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), referring to a statement made by the PT member in March.

Bolsonaro’s defense claims that Lula’s statement constitutes insult and defamation.

The legal dispute began due to a statement made by Lula during the signing ceremony of the decree regulating the “Paulo Gustavo Law”.

At the time, the president mentioned a mansion in California, valued at US$8 million, associated with Bolsonaro’s aide-de-camp.

Bolsonaro’s defense argues that Lula’s statement constitutes an indirect accusation linking the former president to the property.

The property in question belongs to Daniel Cid, brother of Mauro Cid, Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp.

Bolsonaro’s lawyers highlight that the house in California was purchased for US$1.7 million and has no direct relationship with the former president. The criminal complaint aims to protect the rights and interests of the former president, according to lawyers.

“It remains proven, therefore, that the plaintiff [Bolsonaro] has nothing to do with the property in question. Therefore, the question arises: what is the President of the Republic’s intention with this speech, if not a mere insult, frivolous and fallacious, to Bolsonaro’s reputation?”, says the document.

“It appears that the defendant [Lula] did not have – and does not have – any limit in disqualifying the plaintiff [Bolsonaro]repeatedly offending his dignity and decorum”, adds the text.
