One of the biggest questions about National Examination of Aspirants to Medical Residencies (ENARM) is the number of places available for each specialty. It is a very important point because in each edition there are modifications and hardly any information related to 2023 was released.
First of all, it is necessary to remember that From September 26 to 28, 2023, this test was applied. On this occasion the only official headquarters were set up in Puebla, León and Sonora. Now it is time to know the next step within this mandatory step to become a specialist.

How many places will be available for each specialty in ENARM 2023?
In this regard, the Interinstitutional Commission for the Training of Human Resources for Health (CIFRHS) published the official document with the number of places for each specialty in ENARM 2023.
The first thing that is observed is that for the Mexican category there are a total of 18,117 spaces available. Furthermore the National Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies (Conahcyt) will offer 50 scholarships to study the specialty in Cuba. And finally, there are 362 places for foreign doctors.

In this way, a final figure of 18,529 spaces is obtained to begin medical residency. And if it is considered that there were 47,246 applicants, then only 39.21 percent will have the possibility of being a specialist.
From the above it can also be seen that practically six out of every 10 applicants will be rejected. This is a too high figure and although the available spaces doubled in 2020, the figure is still insufficient and is generated by the few hospitals that exist in the country.

The specialties with the most and least places
Now, analyzed by specialties, those that offer the most places in the Mexican category are Family Medicine (2,580), Emergency Medicine (2,286) and Internal Medicine (2,167).
While at the opposite extreme are Physical Activity and Sports Medicine and Preventive Medicine because each one only offers 12 places. While a special case is Legal Medicine because, like last year, it is the only direct entry specialty for which no places were offered.
