French cycle brand, Starway has 230 points of sale across France and produces more than 10,000 electric bikes per year. Special feature: part of the production is assembled by inmates in a workshop at the Uzerche detention center (Corrèze) and the bikes are referenced by the UFC-Que Choisir for their quality. The assembly of the 500th bike in six months was celebrated a few days ago in the workshop.

“We have a strong CSR (corporate social responsibility) approach in the company and wanted to have bikes assembled by people looking for recognition to, in particular, allow them to make a new start or undertake a new project. This is our way of participating in this effort,” explains Dimitri Rouger, product manager at Starway. The company was contacted by Atigip (TIG and professional integration agency), prison employment service, and the Starway bicycle assembly activity was set up at the Uzerche detention center .

There were more requests than places available

The inmates participating in this workshop were initially trained by the cycle brand, it supports them monthly. They receive remuneration and can benefit from a reduced sentence depending on their work. There were more requests than places available for this activity. “It is an assembly which is carried out with control points, training and support on quality, so this will provide them with skills, particularly on the control aspect”, underlines Dimitri Rouger.

Very satisfied with this collaboration, Starway managers have stated the objective of ultimately releasing 4,000 bicycles per year and plan to create another assembly center at the Eysses detention center, in Villeneuve-sur-Lot ( Lot-et-Garonne).
