“Chronic diseases of aging are having a true epidemic trend. Today, in Italy, 1 elderly person in 9 (1 million and 200 thousand people) is affected by dementia and, in 2050, the most optimistic expectation is 1 elderly person in 3, therefore triple. Working from a ‘Health-span’ perspective, that is, not so much in terms of length of life, but of health in life, is a critical issue. Nutrition, especially the Mediterranean diet, is one of the variables we can work on the most. Today we are moving on functional aspects of foods. Introducing adequate levels of olive oil with a high polyphenol content can reduce the risk of dementia by 40%, heart attack by 50% and postmenopausal breast cancer by 65%.
