Manipulation and fraud in digital payment transactions are increasing. “One in five Germans fell victim to payment fraud last year, and 37 percent of retailers in Germany say that fraud attempts have increased,” explains Hella Fuhrmann, country manager for the DACH region at payment service provider Adyen.

The Dutch company surveyed 12,000 companies and 36,000 consumers in two dozen countries for its annual retail report.

The most common online fraud tactics, according to the survey, were fake websites as well as cyberattacks and data theft. From the perspective of retailers, fake websites are a big problem; more than a third have already been affected.

The greatest damage from online payment fraud was in Great Britain (an average of 256 pounds, around 294 euros). In India, almost half of all respondents have been victims of payment fraud, but the damage there is much lower. There is also a lot of fraud in the USA, where 42 percent of those surveyed say they have already become victims.
