Pierre-Louis Bras had been in the hot seat for several months, weakened since the pension reform: his disembarkation is now confirmed. The president of the retirement guidance council will leave his position “after nine years at the helm”, Matignon announced on Wednesday, confirming information from Monde.
“It’s not a sanction,” commented the Prime Minister’s entourage. The COR and its president were criticized during the debate on pension reform by the executive, who accused them of putting the scale of future deficits into perspective. The body, made up of parliamentarians, experts, senior civil servants and representatives of social partners, is responsible for analyzing and monitoring the prospects of the French retirement system.
“He didn’t help us”
Last April 8, in our columns, Elisabeth Borne castigated the COR and Pierre-Louis Bras who said last January, during a hearing at the National Assembly, that “pension expenses are not slipping”, emphasizing that the body’s report predicted lasting deficits following the reform. “It didn’t help us, it confused our minds. This raises questions about the functioning of this body which should normally be a place where we must at least be able to agree on the diagnosis,” scathed the head of government.
This decision had been prepared by Matignon since the spring, according to information from Le Monde. State services had in fact contacted several candidates to succeed Pierre-Louis Bras, with a view to his replacement. The appointment of the next president of the body should take place during the next council of ministers during the week of October 30, again according to the national daily.
The National Union of Autonomous Trade Unions (UNSA) reacted to the arrival of Pierre-Louis Bras at Le Monde, indicating that it will be “particularly vigilant” to the fact that the institution remains “autonomous”. The future of the COR will be scrutinized.
