Achan Maharaj, father of Birju Maharaj, a member of the Maharaj family of Kathak dancers, and his uncles Sambu Maharaj and Lachu Maharaj were also eminent Kathak dancers. Birju Maharaj received the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest award in the country for his talent.
Pandit Maharaj, popularly known as Pandit Ji, Maharaj ji, was also a great drummer. Besides, he can also play the tabla. Able to sing songs in the form of Tumri, Dadra, Bhajan, Kasal in the best possible manner.
Kathak dance will be featured in the song “I will not see you” in Kamal Haasan’s Viswaroopam movie. The song was choreographed by Pandit Birju Maharaj. Also, actor Kamal Haasan learned Kathak dance from him. He will always celebrate Pandit Birju Maharaj.
In this case, he suddenly fainted while playing with his grandchildren at his home in Delhi last night. Homeowners immediately rushed him to the hospital. Doctors who examined him there confirmed that Pandit Birju Maharaj had died of a heart attack. He is 83 years old.
