On October 23, the mayor of Narva, Jaan Toots, visited the Narva Alexander Lutheran Church for the first time since the renovation. During the meeting, the rector of the Narva Evangelical Lutheran Parish of St. Mary Urmas Karileet and Vladimir Batukhtin spoke about the history of Narva churches and gave the mayor a tour of the museum, which opened in 2008 in the restored bell tower of the cathedral.
According to Toots, the only Lutheran church in Narva today amazes with its beauty and rich history. “I never thought that historically there were so many Lutheran churches in Narva and they are all distinguished by their special architecture and majesty. Unfortunately, they have not survived to this day, but their history is carefully preserved by the Alexander Cathedral. I am sure that its revival after renovation will be an important step for Narva, which will attract more attention to both the cathedral and the city as a whole. I am grateful to the rector for the meeting and hope for fruitful future cooperation,” Toots added.
According to the rector of the Narva parish, Urmas Karileet, before today’s renovation, a demonstration of the installation “The Sky over Narva” was held in the cathedral hall for everyone. The spectacle was projected directly onto the church vaults. Sitting on chairs installed specially for this purpose, one could watch the colorful history of Narva come to life. The light installation installed in the cathedral is the largest permanent projection area in all of Eastern Europe, with a total of 520 m2. After the renovation, the demonstration of the installation will resume.
The cathedral was built in 1881–1884. for Lutheran workers of the Krenholm Manufactory. In 2006–2008, the tower and roof of the church were completely repaired, the surfaces of the external walls were restored and new openings were installed.
