On Wednesday afternoon, the Chemnitz city council welcomed Dr. Florence Thurmes elected as the new General Director of the Chemnitz Art Collections. As things stand, the 42-year-old will take office at the beginning of next year.

Thurmes was born in Luxembourg and has a diverse and long-standing professional experience in managing collections, curating exhibitions and designing participation formats, according to a press release from the city administration. She is currently at the head of the Ostwall Museum in the Dortmunder U – the municipal museum of Dortmund. Previously, she was head of the program department at the Dresden State Art Collections. She is well connected in the Free State of Saxony. After studying modern and contemporary art and completing her doctoral thesis in France, she worked for many years as a curator in Luxembourg and Germany.

Cultural Mayor Dagmar Ruscheinsky: “I am very pleased that we were able to win Dr. Thurmes as General Director of the Chemnitz Art Collections. Her extensive experience in the field of modern art history and her handling of it in collections or museums convinced us that she has an excellent position This position has been filled. The new General Director will particularly benefit from her many years of experience from her work at the Dresden Art Collections. She already knows the East German and especially the Saxon cultural landscape in detail. I look forward to a good collaboration with her.”

Together with the team, I would like to further develop and advance the museums whose program I have been following with great interest for years. It is particularly important to me to involve the people in Chemnitz and the surrounding area, to offer children and young people an even better program and to network more closely with the region with its rich cultural offerings. The Chemnitz art collections have a variety of Treasures we can be proud of.”

The previous general director Frederic Bußmann left the company at his own request at the end of July. He moved to the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe on August 1st. (kl)
