The sculpture “For the Love of God” by the British master Damien Hirst, created in 2007 and encrusted with 8601 diamonds, is one of the most expensive exhibits of the exhibition entitled “Damien Hirst – the weight of things.” The Weight of Things”), which opened in a small museum – Munich Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art (MUCA). According to the museum, this is the artist’s first solo exhibition-retrospective in Germany.

More than 40 works from the last 40 years of Hirst’s work can be seen in the Bavarian capital. It also includes the provocative sculptures for which the 58-year-old artist gained worldwide fame – animal bodies preserved in formaldehyde.

In Munich, it will also be possible to see the so-called “spot painting” on an external wall covering an area of 10,000 square meters. It depicts 540 dots of different sizes and colors. “Dot Paintings” are Hirst’s most recognizable and iconic works after animal sculptures. In addition, among the exhibits is the street sculpture “Legend”, which you don’t have to pay to see because it is displayed in front of the museum entrance. This huge bronze statue of Pegasus, with its anatomy exposed on one side, had to be installed using a crane.

Damien Hirst is one of the ten most expensive artists of our time. His total wealth is estimated at $400 million, and his most expensive sculpture, a diamond-encrusted skull, was purchased for $100 million and is now one of the most expensive and carefully guarded pieces in the art world.

The skull with diamonds can only be seen in the bunker

A platinum cast of a human skull, studded with diamonds, is installed in a special bunker – a former bomb shelter. This, as reported by the German news agency dpa, citing the museum’s management, is due to security requirements. “Thank God we have a bunker, otherwise we would have had to build one,” said MUCA co-founder Stephanie Utz. The number of visitors for the bunker tour is limited to twenty people per group. The exhibition of works by Damien Hirst “The Weight of Things” in Munich will last until autumn 2024. However, the skull with diamonds will remain in Munich only until the end of January.
