How much older population exists in Mexico?

In Mexico, 14% of the population is made up of older people. According to National Occupation and Employment Survey New Edition (ENOE), in the second quarter of 2022 there were 17 million 958 thousand 707 people aged 60 or over in Mexico (what is considered older adults).

This represents, as we have already said, 14 percent of the country’s total population. In men, this percentage is 13 percent and in women it is 15%. Likewise, it should be noted that more than half (56%) are between 60 and 69 years old and as age progresses, this percentage decreases.

30% belong to the 70 to 79 age group. 14% to people aged 80 or over.

33% of the elderly population is Economically Active Population

Regarding sex, the percentage is slightly higher for men aged 60 to 69 and for women aged 80 and over.

Also, according to this study, it is estimated that 33 percent of people aged 60 and over are Economically active population (PNEA) and 67 out of every 100 are Non-Economically Active Population (PNEA). Regarding the PEA, the trend shows a decrease with advancing age; It goes from 43 percent for the 60 to 69 age group to 9 percent among those 80 years and older. According to sex, economically active men outnumber women in all age groups.

According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and with the International Labor Organization (ILO), the fact that the majority of older people are self-employed, may be due to “discrimination that hinders older people’s access to paid employment, such as the desire to work independently, taking advantage of existing qualifications.” acquired throughout their working life, to do so in conditions that allow greater flexibility when organizing their work and daily life activities.”

45% of people earn the minimum wage

Although, speaking of work, according to the United Nations (UN), the elderly population in Mexico usually works in low paying jobsthey live on family support or their income is limited to pensions.

Finally, it should be noted that according to the ENOE, 45% of older people who are employed earn up to minimum salary; 22 percent earn income of more than one salary and up to two minimum salaries and 7 percent earn more than two and up to three minimum salaries; while 9 percent receive no income.
