President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) called this Thursday (26) family members of people who are part of the Forum for Families of Hostages and Missing Persons in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas.

According to Secom (Communication Secretariat of the Presidency), “the president has spoken to various parties to the conflict with humanitarian concerns, in defense of a ceasefire and the release of hostages”.

Lula postponed the conversation he would have with journalists this Thursday morning to make the call.

Celso Amorim, special advisor to the Presidency for international affairs, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), senator and leader of the Government in the Senate and Clara Ant, special advisor to the Presidency, also participated in the call.

Lula has sought to take a leading role in resolving the conflict and in an attempt to comfort Brazilians who have been involved in the war in some way.

This Wednesday (25), he spoke with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, to release Brazilians trapped in the Gaza Strip since October 7, when Israel’s blockade of Gaza began.

“I have a phone call with the emir of Qatar to try to see if I can find someone capable of talking to someone to see if we can release, firstly, the Brazilians who are trapped in the Gaza Strip a few kilometers from the border with Egypt, who are wanting to return to Brazil and that until now they have not been allowed the right to return”, said Lula at an event in Planalto yesterday morning.

In total, 26 Brazilians are awaiting repatriation from the Gaza Strip. This number was higher, but 2 Brazilians gave up on returning and will stay in the Middle East. On the Israeli side, 1,137 Brazilians were able to return to the country safely.
