The National Institute of Statistics of Burundi (INSBU) officially launched this Friday, October 20, the month of statistics in Burundi and the African Statistics Day for the year 2023.

“Strengthen the production of official statistics by modernizing statistical data ecosystems to inform the indicators of the vision “Burundi, emerging country in 2040 and developed country in 2060””this is the theme chosen this year for the celebration of this day.

The interim director general of INSBU, Nicolas Ndayishimiye affirms that since the promulgation of the first law number 1/17 of September 25, 2007 relating to the organization of statistical systems in Burundi with implementing texts, reforms of the Institute of Economic Studies Statistics of Burundi, ISTEEBU at the time, a second reform was made to become INSBU.

After the establishment of a legal framework, the Director General ai, announced that the government of Burundi, since 2012, has established central ministerial statistical services responsible for proposing ministerial statistical services with a view to supporting the ISTEEBU or the current INSBU in the production and dissemination of statistical data in all areas of the country’s life.

However, Nicolas Ndayishimiye indicates that there is no shortage of challenges: “Being able to shorten the publication of certain data and produce sub-annual and short-term data remains the project on which we are now focusing” he specifies.

According to him, for there to be effective planning based on real facts, statistics must give both the basic situation, and the mid-term situation, and the end situation of such a program or developed project.

A budget line was taken in 2019, which is an important step for him. And to reveal that before 2019 the services existed but did not have the means to work.
