Puppeteer Ramesh Rawal of Ahmedabad spent his entire life in cherishing this art and made more than 3000 puppets with all his might.

Away from OTT and these many social media platforms, there was a time when people depended on local artists to bring awareness to any social issue or for entertainment. This local art is an integral part of our culture. But in the changing times, we are moving away from both that art and the artists associated with it. 70 year old puppeteer Ramesh Rawal is cherishing one such forgotten art.

Ramesh Rawal from Ahmedabad decided to join art 40 years ago to turn his skill into work. He wanted to do something through which he could connect with people through his creativity. He learned puppet making from the country’s famous puppet artist Mehar Contractor. After which he also became a part of their team.

At that time he made many puppets related to Indian folk tales and Puranas. He also presented puppet shows in many countries including India, Iran, Afghanistan, Rome.

When Ramesh would go to India and abroad to perform shows with puppets, he would always think of one thing after seeing the big theaters and academies built there. He wanted that similar interest should be aroused among the people for puppetry in our country also. Therefore, he invested his own savings and created many puppets so that the coming generations can connect with our rich history through these puppets.

But with time technology developed so much that the 3000 puppets he made remained confined to numerous boxes in his house. Ramesh Rawal faced many financial difficulties during this period but never thought of moving away from this art.

He still believes that one day children will reconnect with this dying art. So that his art remains alive even after artists like him.
Ramesh is currently earning his living by working for small drama groups and troupes. Sometimes he is called to give information about puppetry in any educational institution.

Today, when we keep trying many methods to distance children and youth from the noise of social media, don’t you think that the art of an artist like Ramesh Rawal can be of great use to us.

All that is needed is to bring some awareness. Through The Better India, we will try our best that more and more people know about this dying art and become a part of 70 year old Ramesh Rawal’s campaign. If you also want to join him, then call him on 78740. You can contact on 07987.
