The news had sent the big running family into turmoil. She will be able to say phew. The Corrida de Houilles (Yvelines), the city’s historic foot race, will be held on December 17, the municipality announced this Friday evening.
However, its cancellation seemed inevitable this year. At the end of September, moreover, there was no longer any question of seeing participants taking the start. The fault lies in a dispute between the festival committee, which founded the event in 1972, and the town hall which wanted to take over its organization.
“In recent months, the Corrida de Houilles was threatened and there was an immense risk of seeing this event, part of our local history, disappear. After months of work, and despite the obstacles, I am happy to announce that the Corrida de Houilles 2023 will be held on December 17, writes Mayor (Renaissance) Julien Chambon in a press release published this Friday. The Corrida de Houilles belongs to everyone. It was therefore inconceivable that it would disappear even though its identity is intimately linked to the history of running and the pioneers of road running. »
A new website and a new logo
Once the (good) news has been announced, we must now roll up our sleeves at the town hall to disseminate the information and restart the registration machine. Three formulas will be open to three different audiences. The first (10 km) concerns athletes registered with a club, or posting the best times. The second, over the same distance, is open to all regardless of performance. The third, the children’s race, is reduced to 900 m. All at the single price of 20 euros.
Despite everything, the dispute between the municipality and the festival committee is perhaps not completely resolved. The creator of the committee and former mayor of the city, Alexandre Joly, has in fact registered the Corrida de Houilles brand. And everything from the website address to registering (corrida-de-houilles.com and no more corrida-houilles.fr) like the logo of the event (it is now a hawk in basketball), differs this year. And suggests that the problem is not completely resolved.
