Why we need to take control of AI – technology, power, truth

The rapid development of so-called artificial intelligence has sparked debate about the impact of this technology on our economies, our political systems, our media and – much less discussed – on the state of the biosphere. In these debates, technological development is often portrayed as a quasi-natural force driven by innocent human curiosity and ingenuity. In this view, the only direction in which this force moves is called progress. The path there is paved with milestones such as the invention of writing, the printing press, the steam engine and finally digital technologies. Whatever is possible will be done sooner or later. Societies and the planet must adapt.
