Rodent optic nerve head showing astrocytes (yellow), contractile proteins (red), and retinal vasculature (green). HASSANAIN QAMBARI & JAYDEN DICKSON

This photo of the back of a rat’s eye won the 2023 prize in the Nikon Small World Microscope Image Competition. The image is artificially colored to highlight the optic nerve, the black dot in the center, and surrounding structures of the retina. A protein that helps blood vessels contract is shown in red and cell nuclei are in blue. In yellow are astrocytes, immune cells that participate in the control of inflammation in the retina.

This photo results from the superposition of several photos taken using a confocal laser scanning microscope. It was taken by researcher Hassanain Qambari, with the help of Jayden Dickson, at the Lions Eye Institute Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Center in Perth (Australia). Their research focuses on diabetic retinopathy, a condition which causes a partial or even total loss of visual acuity.
