Title: Families of Israeli Hostages Worry About Their Safety Amid Escalating Israeli Military Campaign in Gaza

Date: October 10, 2022

TEL AVIV — The families of over 200 Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza are growing increasingly concerned about their loved ones’ safety as Israel’s military intensifies its offensive against the Palestinian militant group.

Ayelet Samerano, whose son Jonathan was abducted by Hamas on October 7, expressed her fears about what Hamas might do to Israel. She watched the television coverage of Israel’s ground and aerial attacks on Gaza and hoped for her son’s release while also desiring the decimation of the group responsible for his abduction.

However, not all families were confident that their relatives would be protected during the Israeli offensive. Imbal Zach, the cousin of hostage Tal Shoham, expressed concern that Hamas’s calculations regarding the captives could change due to the ongoing military operations.

The families of the hostages, who come from across Israel’s political spectrum, have formed a group called the Hostages and Missing Families Forum. They communicate constantly through a WhatsApp group and have voiced their concerns about the impact of the military campaign on the hostages’ well-being.

The statement released by the group read, “This night was the most terrible of all nights. It was a long and sleepless night, against the backdrop of the major IDF operation in the Strip, and absolute uncertainty regarding the fate of the hostages held there, who were also subject to heavy bombings.”

On Saturday, more than a dozen families of the hostages gathered in central Tel Aviv to demand a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Holding signs that read “POW exchange now” and “At any cost,” they urged immediate action to secure the release of their loved ones.

While the families acknowledged the importance of a strong military response to Hamas, they anxiously awaited answers to their questions about the government’s plans to free the captives.

The Israeli government reported that more than 1,400 people have been killed in the attacks on Gaza, while Gaza’s Ministry of Health claimed over 7,700 casualties. The ongoing campaign has resulted in the displacement of more than 1 million people, cut off Gaza from important communication networks, and pushed the territory’s healthcare system to the brink of collapse.

The families of the hostages remain determined to seek answers from the Israeli government regarding the safety of their loved ones. As they continue to gather outside a government building in Tel Aviv, they hope for a meeting with Netanyahu and Gallant to address their concerns directly.

The pressing question remains: Does the escalated military activity in Gaza endanger the well-being of the 229 hostages?

As the conflict continues to unfold, the families of the hostages remain caught between their desperate desire for their loved ones’ release and their concerns about their safety in the face of a severe military offensive.
