Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made anti-Israel and Western statements at a rally
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made statements against Israel at a rally in Istanbul, the country’s capital. In an impassioned speech, the politician waved at members of Hamas, causing Israel to summon some diplomats to leave the country.
The speech was given during a large pro-Palestine meeting, an event that would have attracted more than 1.5 million people, according to the organizers. The number has not been confirmed by other sources.
In addition to the country not classifying Hamas as a terrorist group, something rare in the group of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) members, Erdogan would have called the guerrillas “freedom fighters”, according to the Turkish press, also stating that Israel promotes an occupation of Palestinian land.

Despite Turkey condemning the deaths of Israelis in the brutal October 7 attacks, the politician nods to the country’s broad Islamic base, a strength that helped him win May’s presidential elections.
The pro-Palestinian stance is a hallmark of Erdogan. Among other statements of support, Erdogan also congratulated the people of Gaza for not abandoning their homes. After the heaviest bombardment since the start of the conflict and conflicts on the ground, Israel warned that the populations of the Strip and Gaza City should leave their homes. The country has already confirmed that there are troops in the territory, which takes the conflict to a second phase.
Communications to the Strip were cut off earlier today. Itamaraty stated that it had lost contact with the group awaiting repatriation. There are 24 Brazilians and 10 people in the immigration process.
