39 people died after the passage of Hurricane Otis, announces the government in an upwardly revised toll

The human toll from the hurricane which devastated Acapulco, in southwest Mexico, was revised upwards by the government on Saturday October 28, and now stands at 39 deaths. Ten people are also missing, security secretary Rosa Icela Rodriguez said in a video. The 39 victims – 29 men and 10 women – have not yet been identified.

Three days after the passage of Hurricane Otis at maximum force 5, aid began to slowly arrive at the famous seaside resort, still partly deprived of electricity, telephone network and fuel. Some 10,000 security forces were deployed after the looting of supermarkets, authorities said. The army and navy have, moreover, “established an airlift” pour “accelerate the distribution of humanitarian aid”according to the same source.

Thousands of liters of drinking water and food aid have been distributed to some of Acapulco’s 790,000 residents. Army and Navy also use airlift “from Acapulco to Mexico City for patients who need specialized medical assistance”.

A news “tropical depression” is forming in the Pacific south of Mexico off Chiapas and Guatemala, the National Water Commission (Conagua) said.

“Unfortunately, Otis was able to take advantage of very favorable conditions, such as the warmth of the deep waters in the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of Mexico, and a favorable atmospheric environment”explained to Agence France-Presse the director of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, responsible for forecasts and alerts for the area, Michael Brennan.
