Billionaire Elon Musk has announced that his Starlink satellite service will offer internet access to “internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza.” This comes as the region experiences a telecommunications blackout since Friday. Starlink, a network of satellites in low Earth orbit, is capable of providing internet connectivity to remote areas or areas where communications infrastructure has been disabled.
Musk’s response comes following a post by US Democrat congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who condemned the communications blackout in Gaza as “unacceptable.” In a social media post, Musk, who owns Starlink operator SpaceX, stated that “Starlink will support connectivity to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza.”
However, Israel’s Communications Minister has threatened to sever ties with Starlink if Musk proceeds with his plan. The minister took to social media and expressed concerns that the internet access could be exploited by HAMAS for terrorist activities. He also demanded the release of abducted individuals as a condition for maintaining any ties with Starlink.
In response to Musk’s offer, the Head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed the organization’s need for Starlink to establish communication with their staff and health facilities in Gaza. UN agencies and non-governmental organizations have earlier reported losing contact with their teams in the Gaza Strip. As stated by Lynn Hastings, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, hospitals and humanitarian operations require communication to function effectively.
The communications blackout in Gaza was triggered by the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian enclave’s Hamas rulers. On October 7, Hamas launched a terror assault on Israel, resulting in Israel responding with aerial bombardments of terrorist targets in Gaza. The conflict has claimed numerous lives and led to the abduction of individuals.
Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service has previously been deployed in Ukraine following the Russian invasion in 2022. It proved to be a crucial communication tool for the Ukrainian military during the conflict. Musk revealed that he had also prevented Ukraine from wiping out Russia’s Black Sea navy fleet by denying Starlink internet access.
