On Friday, the UN General Assembly adopted a non-binding resolution calling for an immediate and lasting humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to end hostilities. Together with several other states, Hungary voted no.
hvg.hu asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs why Hungary voted no. Máté Pazolay foreign affairs spokesman explained that
the resolution initiated on behalf of the Arab group was not sufficiently balanced, several extremely important elements were missing from the text, which made it impossible to support the resolution.
The spokesperson cited as an example that the resolution did not condemn the October 7 terrorist attack by Hamas, did not call for the unconditional release of more than 200 hostages, and did not confirm the right of states to self-defense.
According to Pazolay’s explanation
Because of these shortcomings, Hungary supported Canada’s amendment proposal, which would have improved the text, condemning the terrorist attack by Hamas and calling for the release of the hostages. Unfortunately, however, the amendment was not accepted.
