The dismissal of Rita Serrano from the presidency of Caixa Econômica Federal brings to three the number of women dismissed from high-level positions since the beginning of the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The president replaced Serrano with the economist allied with the leader of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira.

These changes occur just as the Brazilian Government had been criticized for reducing the presence of women in important positions, despite previous initiatives highlighting the inclusion of women in the Executive.

Serrano’s dismissal coincided with the launch of the “Brazil without Misogyny” initiative, which highlights the importance of gender equality. However, the ministers present at the event, including the first lady Rosângela Lula da Silva (Janja), were questioned about the decrease in the number of women in the Government due to the dismissal of Serrano, however, they refrained from responding.

Lula’s government announced on Wednesday the departure of Serrano from the presidency of Caixa. Despite not being a ministry, the leadership in state banks has a similar status in terms of power, especially due to its reach. Serrano will be replaced by economist Carlos Antônio Vieira Fernandes, an ally of the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL). With this decision, Lula replaces an ally to open space for nominations from the bench called ‘centrão’, a group of centre-right lobbyist parliamentarians.

Serrano is the third woman dismissed in less than a year, after the government boasted the largest number of female ministers in history. In addition to her, Daniela Carneiro (former Minister of Tourism) and Ana Moser (former Minister of Sports) left her positions. Women abandoned their positions in the government in the midst of the ‘centrão’ offensive to obtain more space.
