The window was originally supposed to be installed years ago. However, a legal dispute caused delays.
On Tuesday, Reformation Day, the so-called Reformation Window by artist Markus Lüpertz will be officially inaugurated with a service and reception in the Hanover Market Church. Lüpertz and former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) were invited to the inauguration and were expected, said a spokeswoman for the Evangelical Lutheran City Church Association of Hanover. The church window has already been installed for three weeks. However, the window is criticized twice. On the one hand, a legal dispute lasting years had delayed the installation. Through the colorful window, the plaintiff saw the legacy of his stepfather, who redesigned the Marktkirche after its destruction in the Second World War as an architect with an “atmosphere of simplicity,” at risk. On the other hand, Gerhard Schröder, a friend of Lüpertz, initiated the window and collected donations. After Schröder came under criticism for his closeness to Russian President Vladimir Putin, a large portion of the money was redirected to a Ukraine aid fund. Since then, the community has collected donations on its own. According to the spokeswoman, the costs amount to around 120,000 euros.
