99% of farms in Greece, Poland and Romania are family-owned – Agro Plovdiv

In 2020, there were 9.1 million farms in the EU of which approximately 93% could be classified as family farms (ie farms under family management where 50% or more of the agricultural workforce is provided by family workers, according to Eurostat Family farms dominate the structure of EU agriculture in terms of the number of holdings, their contribution to agricultural employment and, to a lesser extent, the area of ​​land they cultivate and the value of the output they generate .

Almost six out of ten farms (about 57%) are run by the owner and family members alone. In another 36% of farms, family labor accounts for at least 50% of total labor.

Family farms account for the majority of agricultural land in use in 2020 (about 61% of the 157.4 million hectares in use), the majority of the total agricultural workforce (almost 78%), the majority of livestock units (almost 55%) and standard production (about 56%).

Although non-family holdings represent only about 7% of all farms in the EU in 2020, they account for much larger shares of the amount of land used for agricultural production (about 39%), than the total labor force (about 22%) , from livestock units (about 45%) and from standard production (about 44%).

Family farms account for at least 80% of all farms in all EU countries except Estonia (65%) and France (58%). The EU countries with the highest share of family farms are Greece, Romania and Poland (all with around 99% share of all farms).
