The ex-wife and son of the perpetrator of the two shootings that last week claimed the lives of 18 people in the American town of Lewiston (Maine) notified the Police months ago of the mental health problems of the shooter, Robert Card, and that he had access to firearms.

Card, who took his own life after the event, and whose body was discovered last Friday after two days of intense searchwas a 40-year-old Army reservist.

The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office, where the town of Bowdoin is located, where Card’s family has a farm, explained this Monday that it received at least two reports about the shooter’s mental health problems, according to local media.

The first, in May, was issued by Card’s ex-wife and son, who warned that the man was hearing voices and had episodes of paranoia, and warned that he had access to firearms.

In September, the sheriff’s office received an email from Card’s Army reserve unitwarning that the man was hearing voices that accused him of being a pedophile, and that he had threatened to carry out a shooting at the reservation base.

Authorities tried to contact Card but could not find him at his residence. Later, his brother told authorities that he would make sure the man did not have access to his firearms, reports the Portland Press Herald.

The double shooting last Wednesday in Lewiston was the deadliest of the year in the United States, and has reopened the firearms debate for the umpteenth time, yen particular about semi-automatic assault rifleswhich in many places can be purchased for a few hundred dollars after turning 18 years of age.
