Dhawan to bang again?
India opener and T20 and ODI captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the series due to injury. Therefore, Shikhar Dhawan could be fielded as the opening batsman along with KL Rahul.
Dhawan, who has a lot of experience batting as a starter, made his debut in the ODI series against England in March last year. He was unbeaten on 96 in a match. He then showed tremendous play during the one-day series against Sri Lanka in July.
However, Dhawan did not fare much in the recent Vijay Hazare series. He played in 5 matches and scored only 56 runs. However, Maharashtra captain Rudraj Kejriwal, who played in the same series, had scored 603 runs in five matches, including four centuries. He was also the highest run scorer in the series. So, it remains to be seen which of these players the team management will offer.
Goalie as batsman
Virat Kohli, who is scheduled to make his debut in the ODI series against South Africa tomorrow, will be playing as a batsman for the first time since October 2016, not as captain. Having relieved himself of his captaincy responsibilities, he is now expected to focus fully on his batting.

Venkatesh Iyer as all-rounder
Venkatesh Iyer, who scored 198 against Punjab in the last Vijay Hazare Trophy series, caught everyone’s attention. He continued to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL and helped keep the team alive as an all-rounder in the series.
To prove himself as a finisher in the ODIs, he had batted in the middle order in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy. I can say that his decision definitely helped him. He averaged 63.16 and has a strike rate of 133.92 in six games in the series. He also amassed 379 runs, including two centuries and a fifty.
Venkatesh Iyer, who also excelled in bowling, took 9 wickets with a 5.75 economy. With Hardik Pandya out of the squad, Venkatesh is more likely to be fielded as an all-rounder.
What will India’s bowling combination look like?
The Indian team is expected to field 3 crackers and one spinner or 2 crackers with 2 spinners. Considering Venkatesh Iyer as the only sixth bowling option could affect the entire innings. If Venkatesh plays like that, India are likely to drop Shardul Thakur besides the four leading bowlers.
Another option is to leave Venkatesh entirely and go with five batsmen, a wicket-keeper and five regular bowlers. Deepak Sahar could play in 7th position as a bowling all-rounder. However, it will depend on the captain’s decision.
Ashwin’s ODI team comeback
Leading spinner Ashwin last played in the ODI series in June 2017. He played again at last year’s T20 World Cup. He batted in three matches in the series and took six wickets.
ODIs are more challenging for a spinner than a T20. In T20 matches, it is enough to throw four overs without giving up a run. But, the ODIs should make a breakthrough in the middle overs. That’s what any team wants.
