Margit Wachberger will be the new head of the General Procuratorate from November 1st. She succeeds Franz Plöchl, who retired at the end of August. The position was vacant until she was appointed. Wachberger is the first woman to take over the leadership of the highest public prosecutor’s office in the Republic and as such is also chairwoman of the Instructions Council. The appointment as Procurator General was made by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen at the suggestion of Justice Minister Alma Zadić.

Wachberger was appointed judge at what was then the Vienna Criminal District Court in 1991, before becoming a prosecutor at the Vienna Youth Court in 1995 and then at the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office. During this time she worked for the first time as part of an assignment to the General Procuratorate. From 2004, Wachberger was a judge at the Vienna Higher Regional Court, from where she moved to the General Procuratorate in 2007. In 2020 she became one of four First Advocates General of the General Procuratorate.
