Konami announced some time ago that we were finally going to be able to play Metal Gear Solid 1, 2 and 3 on consoles with a Metal Gear Master Collection Vol.1. This one promised a lot, although in the end all these hopes of experiencing remasters up to par have been diluted like Solid’s blood in water.

Finally, Konami has given us what it said, some miserable ports that make us feel like the amputated Revolver Ocelot. And at no time has Komani lied about the content of this Metal Gear Master Collection Vol.1. At all times he said that they were original versions of the game, brought to the new consoles, with a resolution of 1080p and 30 fps. And that is exactly what they have brought us.

Ports and little else.

To start we have the 3 titles of the saga that began their journey in PSX and then reach PS2, PS3 and Xbox 360. These three titles are the ones included in the Metal Gear Master Collection Vol.1 are basically ports of the original versions rescaled to 1080p. There is no work behind these versions other than including the relevant achievements on Xbox or Playstation. If you add to this that when you play it on a 4K TV, which upscales from the native 1080p, we find huge pixels on the screen. And that reminds us that the original PSX did wonders with its 320x240p.

The lack of work reaches such a point that the same bugs that the titles had in their original versions continue to be repeated in these ports. It is very sad to see that a title like it was The Twin Snakesthe remake of Metal Gear Solid 1 back in 2004, see “infinitely” better than this 2023 version.

Half-cooked content.

The same goes for versions of Metal Gear Solid 2 y 3, don’t expect to find anything different beyond what you already saw in its original versions. The only advantage is that you won’t have to dust off your old console to play them. And if it weren’t for the inclusion of Metal Gear 1 in this edition, we are looking at the same content that we already had in Metal Gear Solid HD Collection that reached Xbox 360 more than 10 years ago.

But apart from these “cheap” ports, the Metal Gear Master Collection Vol.1 It has the graphic novels of the first two games. Here again we have to give Konami a hard time, and the fact is that these novels were published physically for Spain and in Spanish. However, the two graphic novels included in the digital version are only in English. The Spanish-speaking public will have to continue pulling Shakespeare’s tongue due to the little work seen by the studio.

In addition to this, Metal Gear Master Collection Vol.1 includes two versions of the classic Metal Gear released for MSX, but here we will have the versions that arrived years later for NES. Two games that are a pleasure to play with modern pads and at 30 fps.

In short, here you have all the content in case you got lost in this little autopsy and machete of Metal Gear Master Collection Vol.1:

METAL GEAR SOLID – Master Collection Version

METAL GEAR SOLID 2: Sons of Liberty – Master Collection Version

METAL GEAR SOLID 3: Snake Eater – Master Collection Version

Metal Gear

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

Digital script book: Complete collection of scene dialogues, informational files and scripts for all the famous codec calls in the series.

Digital guide: Compilation of data and famous phrases from the characters of the Metal Gear saga that also contains a guide with information about maps, locations of hidden objects, etc.

Metal Gear (NES/PC)

Snake’s Revenge (NES)

Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel

Metal Gear Solid 2: Digital Graphic Novel

Metal Gear Solid: Digital Soundtrack

CONCLUSION

Metal Gear Master Collection Vol.1 disappoints in its technical section, they are not remakes, they are not remasters, they are not even minimally worked on and they are the same games that arrived years ago in the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.

But still, for the fans of the saga, this is not an impediment to enjoying the franchise again. After me anger initial due to lack of work and lack of dedication, making ports basics, my mind moved to the late 90s and I began to enjoy these titles like a dwarf.
It doesn’t matter that they are not technically correct and that we have pixels the size of a hand, it doesn’t matter that the loading times are eternal like on a PSX and that we have the same bugs and problems. And this saga, Metal Gear Solid 1, 2 y 3continue to be a reference in gameplay, setting, narrative e immersion.

Kojima in his purest form, without a doubt, in his best moment as a developer, gave us these jewels that, if you are a lover, you cannot stop buying, because… after a few hours with it, it will transport you years back to nostalgia and enjoy the videogames.
