“I have great respect for those who, like Zerocalcare, FumettiBrutti and others, have publicly withdrawn and will not be at Lucca Comics. I respect their decision and their sensitivity, I think they found themselves forced by a very strong animus within them to make this choice. At the same time I also respect those who, like me, consider Lucca Comics a space of freedom where it is necessary to be present.” Speaking to time.news is Tito Faraci, the famous Mickey Mouse screenwriter and cartoonist, who speaks on the phone from Lucca Comics where he is already setting up his space.

“We have been doing this festival for sixty years – Faraci tells time.news, commenting on the controversy surrounding the event after the choice of some well-known cartoonists such as Zerocalcare and others not to participate due to the patronage of the Israeli embassy – It belongs to us, it is a precious cultural terrain, not only in the world of comics but also for the Italian cultural world. And we must also defend it from within.”

Therefore, explains the screenwriter, “in my opinion the choices are not contradictory: one can feel forced by one’s personal animus, not to be able to come, as in the case of Zerocalcare, or one can feel forced to come and bear testimony from within , as I will do.” The ‘Lucca Comics’, adds Faraci, “who owns it in the end? It belongs to those who organize it, to the city that hosts it and above all it belongs to Italian comics. And Italian comics is a space of freedom. And I am here to bear this very testimony.”
